Summer in Johnson County means one thing for parents: figuring out how to keep the kids entertained without losing your mind. And when the heat really kicks in, sometimes the best plan is the simplest one. Throw some towels in the car, grab a change of clothes, and head to a splash pad.

We’ve spent plenty of summer days at these spots with our own families, and they never disappoint. So if you’re looking for an easy go-to list this season, here’s where we’d send you.

Greenwood. Old Town Greenwood has a special place in Johnson County splash pad history because it’s where the very first one was built. It’s a fun little stop on its own, but what makes it even better is the location. You’re right next to The Suds, so the kids play in the water while you’re already thinking about lunch. There’s a small-town summer energy to the whole area that just works.

If your crew needs a little more variety, City Center Park is worth the stop. There are walking trails, a basketball court, accessible playground equipment, and enough open space for kids of all ages to spread out and do their own thing. It’s the kind of park where the toddler can play on the playground while the older kids shoot hoops, and nobody’s bored.

Bargersville. Kephart Park is the one that makes you do a double-take when you first pull up. The splash pad is interactive, colorful, and built for all ages, and there’s a giant playground right beside it. But what really sets it apart is everything else: shaded areas, picnic shelters, biking trails, restrooms, and eight pickleball courts.

“They're simple, fun, and free. No giant planning session required.”

Parents actually get to have fun here too, which makes a bigger difference than you’d think. It’s easy to turn a quick splash pad trip into a full afternoon when there’s enough for everyone to do.

Franklin. Youngs Creek Park is the one you go to when you want to make a day of it. The splash pad has overhead sprinklers, water buckets, and interactive spray features that keep kids busy for hours. But the park itself is right next to downtown Franklin, so you can walk to food, browse some shops, or catch whatever’s happening at the amphitheater.

There’s also a huge playground, pickleball courts, and walking trails if you want to stretch the day out even further. If you’ve never been to downtown Franklin in the summer, this is a great excuse to go.

The best part is that all of these spots are free. No tickets, no reservations, no planning required. Just show up, let the kids run through the water, and enjoy a couple of hours where nobody’s asking for screen time. And if our experience is any indication, everyone sleeps really well afterward.
