Indiana’s first Buc-ee’s could be coming to Greenwood, and whether you’re thrilled or skeptical, nearly everyone around here seems to have an opinion. If you’ve been following the local news or scrolling social media, you’ve seen the debate: “To Buc-ee’s or not to Buc-ee’s?”
Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s actually on the table.
The proposed travel center would sit just off Interstate 65 near Worthsville Road, on the south side of Greenwood, and it would be a big one, roughly 74,000 square feet with around 120 fuel pumps. If approved, it would be the first Buc-ee’s in the state, and both the excitement and the pushback come down to a project of that scale landing in a growing suburb.
For supporters, the appeal is economic. A development this size promises new jobs, added tax revenue, and a steady stream of travelers pulling off I-65, and Buc-ee’s has committed millions toward roadway improvements around the site to help absorb the traffic it would bring. To many, that adds up to a major investment in Greenwood’s future.
The objections are just as real. They’ve been front and center at public meetings, especially from neighbors who live closest to the proposed site. Their concerns center on traffic, noise, and lighting, and on a broader worry about how a project this large could reshape the character of the area. When a travel center of this size moves into a community, the day-to-day changes tend to fall hardest on the people right next to it.
As of early July, the decision was still in motion. The proposal had cleared the Advisory Plan Commission and was headed to the Greenwood Common Council for the final decision.
Whichever side of the debate you land on, this is a project that could shape Greenwood for years to come, and the conversation feels like it’s just getting started.
